Community Member Spotlight
This week our Creator Strategist Kyle Mazer sat down with one of our Adim Members, Ryan Goldsher, to highlight his story as a composer and his experience thus far as an integral member of our community.
Have you ever met a person whose face doesn’t quite match their voice? Well meet stand-up comic, impressionist, and actor Ryan Goldsher, because he can do about 50 of them. “Until I was eight years old, I was sure I was the reincarnation of Elvis,” Ryan says. “It took a few years before I realized I just loved doing his voice, getting people’s attention, and getting them to laugh.” Growing up in Northbrook, Illinois, Ryan has always been an entertainer. As a high schooler, he was that kid in your class impersonating everyone from fellow students to teachers to Morgan Freeman and Al Pacino. But unlike that kid in your class, Ryan was consistently getting laughs. He had tapped into something special.
“I didn’t know what to do with my impressions other than go to open mics in Chicago,” Ryan remembers. “I was sixteen then, so my dad would drive me in on the weekends, and I’d give it whatever I could.” Nine years later, Ryan is a USC graduate living in Los Angeles, performing all over the country, hosting routinely at the Comedy Store, and just last week put out his first special, Many People, on YouTube.
“Did I have thirty minutes? No. Did I still say I’d do the special? Yes.” Filmed in a warehouse in Cincinnati, the first special ever produced by Four by Three, Ryan created an excellent patchwork of impressions of others and reflections on himself, beautifully constructing the identity of an impersonator and the many voices that live inside his head every day. It’s the first big step in a long road that Ryan is excited to walk, focusing on crafting the best material he can, rather than seeking out virality. He spends hours honing in on impressions that sometimes pop up by accident, always using them to further jokes and stories that are funny on their own. “Every week, I just want to make sure I’m doing a little better than I did last week.”
When I asked Ryan about his long-term goals, he laughed a little, took a pause, and said “to make whatever movie I want, and not care what people think about it.” Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his idol Robin Williams, Ryan believes his stand-up career can launch him into his truly desired arena: film. Making short films, voice acting and writing is where Ryan feels most in his element—it’s why he joined Adim in the first place. In reflecting on his experience through the first round of Creator Rooms, Ryan is overjoyed with the people he’s met, gotten to write with, and can’t wait to see where it goes next. Well Ryan, we feel the exact same way about you, your impressions, future specials and feature films. “Now at 25,” he finishes, “I’m like 30% sure I’m not the reincarnation of Elvis.”
